He pointed out that the government had set the target of growing wheat crop on 3 million acres but it could not drain rain and flood water from many parts of the wheat growing belt because only about 2.1 million acres the crop was grown.

He said last year the country produced 26.2 million tonnes of wheat against the national demand of 28 million tonnes which resulted in a deficit of 1.

The chamber president said that many rural areas in Mirpurkhas, Tando Allahyar, Noshehro Feroze and Dadu districts are still under water.

He also warned that if there was a serious shortage of wheat, the price of flour would likely go beyond Rs 200 per kilogram.

He drew the government’s attention to cotton and dates crops, saying that the two exportable crops needed government support to enable the farmers to stand on their feet again.

He complained that the black marketeers were charging excessive prices for the fertilizer and urea and that the government departments that were supposed to regulate the dealers were not performing their duties properly.
