Ali said firefighters and local divers were searching for the missing. He said the boat was estimated to have 70 to 80 passengers on board. Ali said the engine-powered boat was ferrying devotees to the centuries-old Bodeshwari temple on the occasion of the Durga Puja festival.

Panchgarh deputy commissioner or administrative head Zahurul Haq said the boat was carrying more passengers than its capacity. Thousands of Hindus in Muslim-majority Bangladesh visit the Bodeshwari temple every year during Durga Puja, which began in Bangladesh on Sunday.
