The police arrested eight fishermen in connection with an attack on the police and fisheries department officials in the River Meghna early Sunday.

The arrestees allegedly attacked the police and officials during a drive against violation of a sixty-day fishing ban.

The arrested are, among others, Razzak Majhi, Rubel Dhali, Bashir Hossain, Ismail Rahi, Rakib Sardar, Chhabbir Hossain and Md Shaheen Matubbar.

A case was registered with the Hijla police station in connection with the attack during the operation of the fisheries department in the Meghna River of Hijla upazila in Barishal on Friday night.

In the incident, the naval police fired eight rounds of rubber bullets to control the situation.

Hijla police station officer-in-charge Sabuj Mia said that sub-inspector Naseeruddin of the marine police outpost filed the case with the Hijla police station on Saturday night.

Seventeen named people and 25-30 unnamed persons have been accused in the case.

The duty officer of Hijla marine police outpost SI Syed said that under upazila fisheries officer SM Parvez, the fisheries department and marine police jointly conducted the monitoring operation.

On Friday night, while conducting the operation in Sabuj Boya area of Meghna River under Hijla Upazila, a group of fisherman riding on fishing boats attacked the law enforcers with sharp weapons.

In this incident, thirteen including including Bikas Chandra Dey, in-charge of Hijla Marine Police outpost, were injured and later admitted to upazila health complex of Hijla.

Upazila fisheries officer SM Parvez said that all those who were in the mobile court, including Parvez, were injured by the fishermen.
