A fishing trawler named FB Bhai Bhai was robbed in the Bay of Bengal near Kuakata coast under Patuakhali district early Saturday. 

A fisherman named Khokon, 42, was shot by robbers and two other fishermen including Madhu, 30, was hacked. 

Besides, nine went missing after jumping in the sea for safety during the incident.

The injured fishermen were sent to Barisal Sher E Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) after treatment at Patharghata upazila hospital.

Monir Hossain, the owner of FB Bhai Bhai Trawler, said that the trawler left Mohipur with 18 fishermen for the Bay of Bengal at 4pm on Friday.

Later, when they reached the area near Sonar Char at around 2am on Saturday, the robbers riding on another trawler fired shots and boarded on the trawler. At this time, nine fishermen jumped into the sea to save their lives. One fisherman was shot and another one was hacked. 

The rest of the fishermen were made hostages by the robbers after detaining them in the fish storage place of the trawler.

Then the robbers looted everything and fled from the scene after other two trawlers advanced to the spot.

The son of the owner of FB Bhai Bhai trawler Muhammad Miraj said, after the incident, they reported the matter to the Coast Guard. 

Kuakata-Alipur Fishery Owners Association President Ansar Uddin Mollah said that the Bay of Bengal was free from piracy for a long time, adding that they requested the law enforcers to bring the miscreants under the law.

Commander of Patharghata Station of Coast Guard Lt Shafayet Abrar said that the incident of robbery is not in their area. It is under Nizampur Coast Guard Station of Kalapara upazila.

Nizampur Coast Guard Station Contingent Commander Rajiul Hasan said: “I have come to know about the missing and looting the fisherman. We are working to rescue the missing fishermen.”

Mohipur police station OC Abul Khair said: “Although incident is out of his jurisdiction area, still we are collecting information.”
